Do Hangover Prevention Supplements Actually Work?
Hangover-prevention products promise to make tomorrow easier. Some ingredients have interesting early evidence, but the marketing is moving much faster than the science.
The pitch is almost impossible to resist.
Take this before you drink.
Go out.
Have your night.
Wake up tomorrow feeling fine.
Hangover-prevention pills, powders, gummies, probiotics and wellness shots increasingly promise some version of that idea.
It is an appealing promise, especially on the morning after a long weekend.
There is just one problem.
Science still has not found a reliable hangover cure.
That does not mean every ingredient sold for hangovers is useless. Some have produced interesting results in small studies.
It does mean the confidence of the marketing is often far ahead of the confidence of the evidence.
So what actually causes a hangover, what have researchers tested, and is any of this worth your money?
A Hangover Is More Than Dehydration
If hangovers were simply dehydration, the problem would be much easier to solve.
Alcohol does increase urination and can contribute to mild dehydration. That can play a role in thirst, fatigue and headache.
But the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism describes a hangover as the result of several processes happening at once.
Alcohol can disrupt sleep even if it initially makes you sleepy.
It can irritate the stomach and increase acid release.
It can increase inflammation.
As alcohol is metabolized, the body produces acetaldehyde, a toxic and short-lived byproduct that contributes to inflammation in multiple organs.
And as intoxication wears off, the brain can temporarily swing in the opposite direction from alcohol's relaxing effects, contributing to restlessness or anxiety.
That helps explain why one electrolyte packet cannot neatly solve the entire experience.
A hangover is not one problem. It is several effects of alcohol arriving at the same morning.

What Does the Best Review of Hangover Treatments Say?
One of the clearest answers comes from a systematic review published in Addiction.
Researchers examined 21 randomized placebo-controlled trials involving 386 participants. The studies tested pharmacologically active interventions intended to prevent or treat alcohol-induced hangover.
A handful of interventions showed statistically significant improvements in individual studies, including clove extract, tolfenamic acid, pyritinol, Hovenia dulcis fruit extract, L-cysteine, red ginseng and Korean pear juice.
That sounds promising until you look at the quality of the evidence.
The reviewers rated the certainty of every efficacy result as very low.
Many studies were small. Different trials used different ways to measure hangovers. Some findings came from a single study and had not been independently replicated.
The review therefore did not establish a reliable hangover treatment.
Interesting is not the same thing as proven.
What About DHM?
Dihydromyricetin, usually shortened to DHM, is one of the most recognizable ingredients in modern hangover supplements.
It is a flavonoid associated with Hovenia dulcis, sometimes called the Japanese raisin tree.
Laboratory and animal research has made DHM scientifically interesting, particularly around alcohol metabolism and alcohol's effects on the nervous system.
But promising biological mechanisms are not the same as strong clinical evidence that a commercial DHM supplement prevents hangovers in people.
The systematic review did not establish DHM as a proven hangover cure.
That distinction matters because supplement marketing can jump quickly from an ingredient having a plausible mechanism to a finished product implying a predictable real-world benefit.
A plausible mechanism can justify more research. It cannot substitute for the research.
Do Electrolytes Prevent Hangovers?
Electrolytes are another intuitive idea.
Alcohol can increase urination. You lose fluid. Therefore, replace fluid and electrolytes and prevent the hangover.
The physiology is not that simple.
NIAAA notes that research has not found a correlation between the extent of electrolyte disruption and hangover severity, or evidence that added electrolytes reduce hangover severity.
That does not make an electrolyte drink pointless.
If you are thirsty, drinking fluids is reasonable. An electrolyte drink may be an easy way to get fluid and can be useful in situations where someone has lost substantial fluid for other reasons.
It just should not be confused with a scientifically established hangover-prevention treatment.
Hydration can help you hydrate. That is not the same claim as curing a hangover.
What About Probiotics, Vitamins and Herbal Blends?
This is where the supplement aisle becomes difficult to evaluate.
A bottle may combine vitamins, amino acids, botanical extracts, antioxidants, electrolytes and probiotics into one proprietary-looking formula.
Individual ingredients may have biological rationale or preliminary research behind them.
But evidence for an ingredient does not automatically establish that a particular commercial mixture prevents hangovers at the dose on its label.
Formulation matters. Dose matters. Timing matters. Bioavailability matters. And clinical outcomes matter.
Without good trials on the finished product, certainty should stay modest.
A long ingredient list can look scientific without being clinical proof.
A New 2026 Amino Acid Study Is Worth Watching
There is newer evidence that deserves attention rather than dismissal.
A 2026 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial in Scientific Reports tested an amino acid mixture in healthy adults before alcohol consumption.
Twenty-one participants completed both study sessions.
The mixture contained branched-chain amino acids along with L-arginine, L-methionine and L-alanine.
Compared with placebo, the intervention was associated with faster reductions in blood alcohol and acetaldehyde concentrations.
Participants also reported lower severity for some alcohol-related symptoms, particularly fatigue and cognitive difficulty, 13 hours after drinking.
No clinically significant adverse effects were reported in the trial.
Those are genuinely interesting findings.
They are also findings from a small study of one specific formulation under controlled conditions.
The authors themselves say further studies are needed to confirm the results and clarify the mechanisms.
One encouraging trial is a reason to keep studying something, not a reason to declare the hangover solved.
This Is What “Promising, Not Proven” Looks Like
Hangover research creates a perfect environment for overstatement.
The symptoms are common. People want relief. The biology involves multiple pathways. Many nutrients and plant compounds can be connected to at least one of those pathways.
That creates a tempting chain of logic:
- Alcohol affects pathway X.
- Ingredient Y affects pathway X in a laboratory or animal model.
- Therefore, a supplement containing ingredient Y prevents hangovers.
The third step is where evidence often becomes much weaker.
To know whether a product reliably prevents or reduces hangovers, researchers need well-designed human trials using meaningful outcomes, appropriate controls, enough participants and ideally independent replication.
That evidence base is still thin.

The FDA Has a Problem With Hangover-Cure Claims
There is also a regulatory distinction worth knowing.
In 2020, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration sent warning letters to seven companies selling products marketed for hangovers.
FDA explained that claims to cure, treat, mitigate or prevent hangovers can establish a product's intended use as a drug under federal law.
The products identified in those letters were being sold as dietary supplements but had not been evaluated by FDA as safe and effective drugs for those intended uses.
That does not mean every supplement marketed around drinking is illegal.
It does mean there is a meaningful difference between a general wellness statement and a claim that a product prevents or cures a medical condition.
Words matter.
“Supports hydration” and “prevents hangovers” are not the same claim.
Could a Hangover Pill Change How Much Someone Drinks?
There is another question that has almost nothing to do with whether a capsule contains the right botanical extract.
What happens psychologically when someone believes tomorrow's consequences have been handled?
A supplement cannot make a high level of alcohol exposure safe.
Even if a future product reliably reduced headache or fatigue, that would not erase alcohol's effects on judgment, coordination, sleep, the gastrointestinal system, liver, cardiovascular system or long-term health.
Feeling better the next morning would not prove that the alcohol caused no harm.
That is why FDA warned that consumers should not rely on hangover products as an alternative to limiting alcohol consumption.
Feeling less hungover would not make the amount you drank safer.
What Actually Reduces the Chance of a Hangover?
The least marketable answer is also the most reliable.
The amount of alcohol matters.
NIAAA says that, in general, the more alcohol a person drinks, the worse the hangover is likely to be.
The order of beer, wine and liquor does not reliably protect you.
Coffee does not cure a hangover.
A cold shower does not cure a hangover.
Drinking more alcohol the next morning may temporarily change symptoms, but it can prolong the problem.
If someone plans to drink, practical harm-reduction choices include deciding how much to drink before the night gets going, drinking more slowly, eating, alternating alcoholic drinks with nonalcoholic ones, and arranging transportation before alcohol affects judgment.
Water can address thirst and fluid loss. Food can be easier on an empty or irritated stomach. Neither should be treated as permission to increase alcohol intake.
And if avoiding a hangover is the priority, drinking less alcohol remains more dependable than any supplement currently on the market.
The strongest hangover-prevention strategy is still reducing the amount of alcohol your body has to process.
What I'd Actually Spend My Money On
Imagine you have $30 to prepare for a night out and the morning after.
You could spend it on a premium packet promising a sophisticated blend of amino acids, botanicals and electrolytes.
Or you could put more confidence in the boring things.
Eat before or while you drink.
Have water available.
Pay for the ride home.
Choose a lower-alcohol or alcohol-free drink for part of the night.
Drink less than you otherwise would.
Give yourself enough time to sleep.
None of those choices comes in beautiful packaging.
They also do not require pretending science has discovered something it has not.
If a supplement helps you feel prepared, fine. Just do not let the packet convince you that your alcohol limit moved.
Be Careful With Pain Relievers Too
The morning-after medicine cabinet deserves some caution.
NIAAA warns that combining alcohol and acetaminophen can be toxic to the liver.
Aspirin and ibuprofen can irritate the stomach lining and increase acid release, which may be particularly unpleasant when alcohol has already irritated the gastrointestinal system.
That does not mean nobody can ever use an over-the-counter pain reliever after drinking.
It means medication choice, timing, dose, other health conditions and the amount of alcohol consumed matter.
If you are unsure what is safe for you, ask a pharmacist or healthcare professional rather than treating a social-media hangover routine as medical advice.
The Least Exciting Cure Is Still Time
Hangovers tend to peak when blood alcohol concentration returns to around zero.
Symptoms can last 24 hours or longer.
Your body has to clear alcohol and its metabolic byproducts, rehydrate, recover from disrupted sleep, settle irritated tissues and restore normal brain and immune activity.
NIAAA's conclusion is wonderfully inconvenient for the supplement industry: there is no magic potion that speeds all of that up.
Time does.
That is not a satisfying answer when you have plans at 9 a.m.
It is still the answer.
The least exciting hangover treatment is still the one your body actually needs: time.

So, Do Hangover Prevention Supplements Work?
Right now, the strongest answer is: we do not have good evidence that the category reliably prevents hangovers.
Some individual ingredients and formulations have produced promising results.
The 2026 amino acid trial is a good example of research worth following.
But the broader systematic evidence remains weak, small and difficult to generalize.
That means you should be skeptical of certainty, not necessarily curious research.
A product may eventually prove useful.
A particular ingredient may turn out to reduce specific symptoms.
Better trials may change what we know.
Science is allowed to move.
Marketing should not get to arrive at the conclusion first.
The evidence does not say nothing works. It says we have not proved enough yet.
The Part Worth Remembering Tomorrow Morning
A hangover is more complicated than dehydration.
Electrolytes can replace fluid and electrolytes, but they have not been shown to cure hangovers.
DHM, herbal extracts, amino acids and other ingredients remain areas of research rather than established cures.
A small 2026 trial found encouraging results for one amino acid mixture, but it needs confirmation.
FDA has warned companies that hangover prevention, treatment and cure claims can cross the line into unapproved drug claims.
And no supplement makes heavier drinking safe.
If you decide to drink, the amount you consume remains one of the biggest things you can control.
If you wake up feeling terrible anyway, water, food if you can tolerate it, rest and time are considerably less glamorous than a wellness packet.
They are also more honest about what your body is doing.
You do not need a better hangover hack nearly as much as the supplement aisle would like you to think.
